Getting To Know You

Who do you see
When you look in the mirror?
Someone who looks like you,
Without all the fears?

The face so familiar
You’ve seen it before
It’s aged just a little,
The wrinkles grown more.

Life has a way
Of wearing us down
As we try to keep moving
Faking smiles, banning frowns.

Our journey as mortals
Is not easily trod
Satan’s not a speed bump
He’s the antithesis of God.

He wants us to focus
On the hand we’ve been dealt;
And the unfairness behind it
And must handle ourselves.

We didn’t invent sin,
But are marred by its curse;
And we’ve mastered the blame game,
Our hearts are perverse.

If self absorption’s a sin
We’re guilty as charged
Since the world revolves ’round us,
We must be in charge?

You can’t love another
Without loving yourself,
But we don’t love self too little
We love self too much.

How can life get better
With hell all around,
And troubles surround us
Evil appearing to abound?

But to know ourselves
We’ve got to change our gaze
‘Cause focusing on self
Leaves us lost, in a maze.

When we’re concerned about others
And not about self
Our focus gets clearer,
We gain heavenly wealth.

And righteousness grows
As relationships thrive
And we gain new perspective
It’s from them life derives,

Full meaning and purpose
And joy in the walk
Cause we’re walking together
And while walking can talk.

And as teams play better
When the 5 play as one
So we are more balanced
And in life we have won.

So let’s focus on others
And not on ourselves,
‘Cause if there’s a God in heaven
He’ll look after us.

About menmourningmoments

I'm happily married, the Father of 2 sons and 2 daughters and 4 beautiful grandchildren. Death is all around us but somehow we've managed to distance ourselves from it. Men, Mourning, Moments is about how the death of my son awakened me to life & the desire to seize every moment as though it were my last. It's about making sense of life in the good times and bad and allowing GOD to carry me and teach me through the hard times in life.
